Mayhem in the Courtroom

One of many gripping scenes in “Goshawk:”

“If you do not behave properly, the Court will impose fines on you and, if you still do not act in accordance with the rules of this Court, you might be sent to jail!”

“Who’s this Court?”

Judge Fischbein answered slowly and deliberately. “I am the United States District Judge hearing this case. In this case, I am the Court! I will not permit my courtroom to be disrupted in this fashion!”

“You gonna give me money and make them treat me same as Japanese people, Judge?”

Nathaniel Fischbein raised himself to his full 5’ 6-1/4” and leaned over the bench to speak directly into the wrestler’s nearly purple face.

“The Court will not be intimidated by your outrageous behavior. While the Court has yet to hear your arguments, the Court will not grant anyone, not even you, relief on the spot. It is incumbent on the Court—”

David was momentarily distracted as Ani leaned across Frank to ask if their case would be next. He looked further down the row to see Margaret tensely waiting for their motion to be called.

A dull, hollow thump drew David’s attention toward the front of the courtroom. A pair of bent gold-rimmed glasses sailed through the suddenly silent courtroom into the empty jury box. Konashita’s meaty hands held Judge Fischbein’s bloody head firmly by both ears. He continued pounding the bench with the judge’s head. Chunk, chunk, chunk!

The bailiff, William Pilkington, leaped over the low railing to the judge’s defense and was promptly thrown aside by a sharp backhand. Konashita continued pounding Nathaniel Fischbein’s motionless torso. The judge’s right arm hung limply over the front edge of the high bench. The polished oaken gavel slipped from Nathaniel Fischbein’s failing grasp to the floor with a faint ping. Pilkington crawled slowly behind the bench. A loud klaxon erupted in the hall outside Judge Fischbein’s courtroom.”
