A Glimpse of the Plan

First meeting with Ani in Krakow, Poland:

“Once the lithe and luscious Polish blonde he later knew as Agniesczka Czarnocki caught David’s attention during his summer trek through Eastern Europe, the trip became much more fun. Falling for this perky illegal currency trader as he watched her conduct business in Krakow’s main square was probably the most irresponsible thing he’d ever done. And it must have felt like a warm spring day. So what if his instant infatuation with Ani might have been a reaction to getting thrown out of his home and the beginning of his nasty divorce, with all the accusations, threats and pain? Maybe the precipitous departure of his partner, Gideon Stahl, to become Ambassador to Namibia, leaving David to clean up the financial mess had made him do it. Or maybe his difficult childhood or the Devil made him do it. Yeah, right!

Truthfully, Ani was new and different; she fascinated him, heightened his senses, and teased him. And he was really intrigued by the way her illegal business worked.

With a final twist of the leather-covered steering wheel of his BMW, David Garvey had squeezed his racy convertible tightly into the narrow space between a bubbling stone watering trough and a yellow mailbox on a cobbled back street just off the square in Krakow’s Old Town, trying to minimize his chance of getting towed. Pressing a tiny red button on his key ring to click the car’s doors locked in front of what seemed to be a clock repair shop, he remembered that this wasn’t New York City. Give it a rest, the young lawyer thought to himself, you’re on vacation. Then David Garvey felt someone tugging at his arm, a skinny young boy wearing grimy khaki shorts and a pair of bedraggled sandals looking up at him with beseeching eyes.

“You want my mother?” the lad asked. “She virgin.”

He’d traveled all the way to southeastern Poland to find a comedian. “Shouldn’t you be in school, kid?”

“Got your attention. Right, Meester?”

“So how’d you know I speak English? Don’t I look German? German car, German plates.”
