A Planning Session with the Iraqi Dictator

The beginning of the Iraqi plan to steal David Garvey’s financial business in “Goshawk:”

“Respected Leader paused for an instant, then continued his diatribe. “Even if we could move money around those despicable United Nations sanctions, if even a scent of our activities reaches the cutthroat, rumor- mongering American press, nothing is possible. No, my nephew, we will not be putting more money into the United States or even England.”

An ever so faint glimmer of pleasure crossed Tariq’s moisturized and lightly powdered face, perhaps a memory of some dalliance in Paris or one of the other founts of sensuous conquest on the European continent, a most welcome way to serve his puritanical country. Some tangible cause for zealous devotion!

Without thinking, Tariq licked his lips before speaking. “The depressed economy in Europe presents many bargains, France and Italy, in particular—”

“Decadent! Those duplicitous French! By the beard of Allah, they never help anyone but themselves and are so arrogant and difficult to deal with.”

A telephone at revered Uncles right hand buzzed twice. He picked up the receiver, listened intently, muttered a single syllable, and then returned the instrument to its resting place. Tariq wondered whose fate had been determined by that brief interchange.”
