After Buddy Lassiter finds Lea and their daughter in “Stepping on Fingers:”
“Loud knocking at the front door interrupted the conversation.
Drak stuck his pistol behind his belt in the middle of the back and scurried over to the front door to open it. He swung the door open to reveal a tall Franklin County sheriff’s deputy in the requisite gray, felt cowboy hat, pointing to the BMW and Tariq standing dejectedly beside it: “who owns the Beemer? Its registration’s expired and I just gave that Arab a ticket for driving with expired plates that I noticed when he drove by my patrol car. You own that car, boss?”
“No, sir,” Drak responded. “I believe car belong to him,” pointing to Buddy Lassiter.
The Governor stepped across the room and out into the yard beside the deputy. “The BMW was leased, kind sir, and I got no idee why its registration may not be current. Please allow me to get them there papers out of its glove compartment and we can hava look. Doesn’t that problem belong to the leasing company?”
”Maybe,” the deputy said “but the driver still gets a ticket for driving an unregistered vehicle and has to pay the fine. That can be taken care of in traffic court right here in Malone, no later than a week from Tuesday. Here’s the ticket.”
“Thank you, officer. We’ll make sure the ticket is paid and we’ll notify the leasing company.”
The sheriff’s deputy climbed into his patrol car, called into his dispatcher to tell her he would be back on the road shortly and rolled slowly out of the driveway.
The Governor turned to Tariq. “Not really your fault. Who checks stickers on license plates, even here in New York where there are plates on both front and back ends of cars? Let’s go inside. I don’t much like any attention from cops so let’s see what comes next.”
