Beginning of David’s Case against NeuBank

Another taste of “Goshawk:”

“Goshawk” is about David Garvey’s very successful loan-sharking operation in what was left of the Soviet Union after the Berlin Wall came down that the Iraqis tried to steal. David’s scheme was financed by NeuBank. David had to sue NeuBank because, at the Iraqis’ urging, the bank told David’s customers to stop paying their loans so NeuBank could get the valuable collateral the Iraqis wanted. Here’s some of the beginning:

As soon as his firm moved in, he had disabled this particular annoyance of lights coming on automatically when someone entered his office. He fixed the problem himself, because he despised glaring overhead lights and the overhead lights often went out anyway if he sat quietly at his desk. A bright glow from Rockefeller Center’s outside lighting across Fifth Avenue filled David’s office. He swept a finger through the floating holographic speaker button on his communications console and touched the holographic image glowing “Czarnocki-Home.” After a series of thirteen melodic electronic beeps, David found himself listening to the emptiness of the phone system’s international circuitry, not unlike a passive sonar sweep from a submarine into the deepest part of the ocean.

Seven hours toward the new day, a ringing telephone roused Agniesczka Czarnocki from the fitful torpor that usually followed too much wodka. She tensed noticeably. The irritating ringing continued, but Agnieszka did not move from her bed. She just cracked open one bloodshot eye to sneak a look at the clock.

“Even chickens are still sleeping,” she muttered to herself.

Finally, a click of her answering machine silenced the noisy phone. “… message after beep. BEEEEEEEP!”

“Krasavyitsa, this is David. Please pick up if you’re there. We have an emergency! I need you to come to New York this—”

“You know I don’t mind when you wake me up in person, David,” Ani grinned sleepily into the phone as she reached over the slumbering body beside her. “Not fully light here yet. What’s happening in Big Apple?”

Ani listened as the lawyer gave her a brief and sanitized version of recent events in New York. Then David asked her to get someone to fly her to Warsaw and to grab the next LOT or American flight to Kennedy or Newark.

“Please call my office before you get on the plane to let us know the flight arrangements. We can have someone pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel. We’re using a different hotel as the result of some recent difficulties. I’d rather not talk about that over the phone. I need some time with you this evening so we can talk with Frank Gillespie about what you need to do on Friday, but we can set that up after you arrive. Watch out for him, Ani, he has a worldwide reputation for fondling beautiful women under the table.”

“Why you don’t sit between us? Then I can handle you under table!

Call you from airport in Warshava!”
