The author of McPheters Books enjoys reading the works of three specific American authors and occasional Scandinavian writers. He often rereads their particularly compelling works, sometimes in large print for a more relaxing process.
He prefers thrillers and that’s what he writes. Writing complex and exciting books yields products which are entirely lacking cotton candy and unicorns.
In today’s electronic world, getting the attention of book customers and readers is an increasing challenge. The phone and computer have endless and increasing pulls. More people seem interested in Kindle and audio books than paper.
Someone I know was attending every-other-day gym ride on recumbent bikes, weight lifting and pull-downs. He was ready to use the hamstrings building machine. The guy using that machine was stopping every few leg lifts to check the screen on his phone, endlessly. My friend could only grit his teeth. It reminded him of the fellow who could not be bothered to turn off his phone during prayers at church. Almost everyone seems glued to their phones. It’s challenging to move people toward the written word, particularly if they’re more interested in genres other than thrillers.
Hence the importance of exciting text to draw more people to a writer’s product.
