David Garvey Narrowly Survives Attack

After Marja faded away, near the beginning of “Goshawk:”

“David slipped the thumb drive Marja has pressed into his hand at the end into the external drive recessed into the wall beside the bathroom’s double sink. Next, he turned with a vengeance toward the task of expunging all evidence of the recent carnage from his body.

Pinpoint streams from the conical chrome shower-head assaulted his weary body as a flood of deeply then faintly crimson water cascaded over the polished Italian tiles at his feet and quickly disappeared down the drain. Over the steamy hiss of the water, David heard loud, guttural voices coming from the view screen. He peeked out of the fogged glass shower door, ignoring the deluge of soapy water running out onto the floor.

On the nearby wall-screen, David saw an elegantly dressed young fellow, probably an Arab. He was sitting on a low couch in a windowless room, opposite a hulking and obviously very angry older man, whose face seemed vaguely familiar—wavy, dark hair and eyes, thick, black mustache, rows and rows of medals and ribbons on his military uniform. At first, David couldn’t hear what they were talking about; as he moved closer and stabbed at the holographic control to increase the volume, what he heard and saw made his blood run cold.”
