Relieving some Tension

As “Stepping on Fingers” unfolds, saving Lea:

“Despite some closure from disposing of Judge Beckinsale, Lea remained concerned about the explosive device embedded in her neck and the amulet between her breasts. It was supposed to fool the bomb about Lea’s location, making the explosive device think she was still within the bounds of Penal Colony 627 in faraway Russian territory.  Being more than pragmatic, some might say paranoid, she wasn’t willing to count on the fact the amulet would protect her from the fatal consequence of an unexpected explosion.  Despite the fact that shards of the Execution Box were somewhere around Rochester, New Hampshire. Lea needed to be rid of the explosive device and would need a qualified and trustworthy surgeon to remove all of it from her body.

She said to her helper, Drak, ” It’s time for another visit with Rodney Herbert so I can arrange another meeting with that heavy smoker in the old Cadillac.”

Before long, Lea was knocking at the door of the Movement contact’s double-wide trailer.  She could hear the single engine of a light aircraft revving up for takeoff at the nearby airport. Rodney Herbert almost immediately opened his door again and peered out.

“How can I help you?” he asked, fondling his heavier beard.

“I need to meet with the woman in the Cadillac and I must be able to trust you and the other Movement people.  Long story short, after I was sent to Penal Colony 627, a doctor there attached a bomb to my spinal cord.  It was designed to monitor whether I stayed within the boundaries of that island.”

She turned to show the Movement’s man the ugly scar on the back of her neck, still visible even though most of her red hair had grown back. He sighed sympathetically…”
